Curt Swanson (Ph.D., CE '83) "retired" from Western Michigan University (WMU), after 32 years of teaching. But then he promptly went to work for London Metropolitan University, United Kingdom (2001 to 2004), where he started three degree programs in Aviation Operations and Management for the Department of Civil Aviation. That project seems to be thriving with over 300 students and five faculty members:

After returning from the U.K., he served as Acting Chairperson for the Department of Aviation Sciences, College of Aviation, WMU from 2005 to 2007. Curt then moved, with his wife Sylvia, to Vero Beach, FL, but he still wasn't through: he then worked as a Development Engineer with Piper Aircraft working on the PiperJet project. However, he now insists that, as of March, he's fully retired. He recently contacted CEE chair, Mike Demetsky after reading the last edition of the department's newsletter, Infrastructure. Curt remembered his buddies in the Ph.D. program at UVA: John Stone and Gerry Roberts.
