Major Robert Young Serving with Distinction

Rob Young (CE '00) Major USAF, currently teaches Civil Engineering at the U. S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, where he was elected as Instructor of the Quarter for Fall 2007 and Core Course Instructor of the Year.

Upon graduating with distinction in 2000, he received his commission in the U. S. Air Force. His assignments with the Air Force have been many and varied. Early in his career, he received the Joint Service Expeditionary Medal for his service as Advanced Team Engineering Officer in Kyrgyzstan, where he served as lead engineer on a thirty man team that developed a site that was to become the U. S. Air Base. (Rob had extended his tour in the region for the second time following the attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C. in 2001.) Subsequently, he served as Chief of Plans and Programs, 89th Civil Engineer Squadron, Andrews AFB, Maryland (July 2000 – July 2002), Readiness Flight Chief, 89th Civil Engineer Squadron, Andrews AFB, Maryland (July 2002 – June 2003), Deputy Chief of Design, 51st Civil Engineer Squadron, Osan AB, Korea (June 2003 – June 2004), and Project Manager, Office for Engineering and Logistics Services, Defense Intelligence Agency, D.C. (June 2004 – May 2006).

Rob earned a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Maryland in 2007 and will begin work on his Doctorate there this fall.

Rob is married to the former Jessica Knowlton, who is also a U.Va. graduate (Class of 2000). As he relates, their story is a little like “Bogart and Bacall”.  They met as First Year students, dated for a while and then went their separate ways, remaining friends.  In 2003, when Rob was stationed at Osan AFB in Korea, Jessica was teaching school in Japan.  Somehow they made and maintained contact in the Orient.  Upon return to the States they continued to see each other and a year later were married.  They reside in Colorado Springs with their two sons, David and Jackson.
