Construction of Textile Dyeing and Finishing Wastewater
Treatment Facilities in Latin American

W. Gilbert O’Neal, Ph.D., P.E.

Abstract

As a result of CAFTA and other trade policies favoring relocation of manufacturing operations outside the United States, many textile companies are building facilities in Latin and South America. Many of these companies are choosing to maintain environmental standards similar to those in the U.S. even though they are not required by local practices and regulatory standards. Due to the experience and knowledge obtained through work with the U.S. textile industry, the Institute of Textile Technology has been providing consulting service for the design and construction of textile wastewater treatment plants in Latin America, specifically, Honduras and Nicaragua. The environmental issues faced by these countries and the experiences encountered during construction and start-up of facilities will be discussed.

The Civil Engineering seminar series is open to the University community.
Civil Engineering undergraduate students are especially invited to attend.
